Therapeutic Phlebotomy

Therapeutic Phlebotomy at Bristol Health Hub is a clinically supervised procedure involving the removal of up to 450ml of blood when appropriate. This treatment may be recommended for certain medical conditions or chosen as part of a personalised wellbeing plan, following a suitability assessment.
Some individuals report feeling refreshed and more energised after treatment. The procedure may also support the body's natural processes by helping to regulate iron levels where clinically indicated. Every appointment is carried out by trained healthcare professionals in a safe, comfortable, and professional environment.
If you're unsure whether Therapeutic Phlebotomy is suitable for you, our team will be happy to discuss your individual needs and determine whether this treatment is appropriate.

What to Expect
Your Therapeutic Phlebotomy appointment will take place at Bristol Health Hub in a welcoming, professional clinical environment. From the moment you arrive, our experienced healthcare team will guide you through the process, answer any questions, and ensure you're comfortable throughout your visit.
The procedure itself is straightforward and is carried out using sterile, single-use equipment in line with strict clinical standards. Most appointments are completed within 20–30 minutes, allowing you to return to your day with minimal disruption.
Preparing for Your Appointment
To help ensure the best possible experience, we recommend drinking plenty of water before your appointment and remaining well hydrated throughout the day. It's also beneficial to eat a light meal or snack within a couple of hours of your visit to help maintain stable blood sugar levels.
On the day of your appointment, we advise avoiding alcohol and strenuous physical activity beforehand. Wearing clothing with loose or short sleeves will make it easier to access your arm during the procedure.
If you are feeling unwell, have recently been ill, or have any concerns about your suitability for treatment, please contact us before attending your appointment.
When Therapeutic Phlebotomy May Be Appropriate
Therapeutic Phlebotomy may be recommended for individuals where reducing blood volume or iron stores is considered clinically beneficial. Depending on your medical history and healthcare needs, this procedure may be appropriate for:
-
The management of iron overload disorders, including haemochromatosis.
-
Reducing elevated haemoglobin or haematocrit levels in conditions such as polycythaemia.
-
Helping to decrease blood viscosity where this has been identified as a contributing factor to certain health conditions.
-
Supporting the management of conditions where excess iron may affect organ function, including the liver.
-
Alleviating symptoms that may be associated with raised red blood cell levels, such as headaches, dizziness, or fatigue, where clinically appropriate.
-
Individuals who have been advised by their GP or specialist to undergo regular venesection as part of their ongoing treatment plan.
Every patient is assessed individually before treatment. During your consultation, our clinical team will review your medical history, current health, and any relevant blood test results to determine whether Therapeutic Phlebotomy is suitable and safe for you.
Your wellbeing is our priority, and we only recommend treatment where there is a clear clinical indication and it is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
